About This Venue

A mythic-level family business founded by an Italian immigrant (nicknamed Bimbo) in 1931 as a Market Street speakeasy with music and vaudeville before moving to its current home in North Beach in the 50s. The current management team is the grandsons and son-in-law of the founder.

The vibe leans into the old school glamour and kitsch, including the "live mermaid" trick aquarium that goes back to the first location. It's a bit of a wonder that the venue has managed the major transitions of the last 100 years, and a good read from SF Heritage.

The building itself was designed by Timothy Pflueger, who was also the architect of famous spots like the movie palaces in the Castro and Alameda.
